Start with one working device. Confirm that the hardware and firmware do what you intend to sell before creating a larger batch.

Prepare one representative unit

Use the board model, sensors, controls, power supply, and firmware that you intend to ship. Check that the device connects, sends the expected readings, and responds to its controls. Write down what a passing unit should do. For a temperature monitor, this could include a plausible reading, a working alert, and reconnection after restarting. These checks become your production checklist.

Create the device template

A device template describes the common setup for your product. In Firmngin, an entity is a data point or control, such as temperature, battery level, or relay state.
  1. Select the workspace where you will manage the product.
  2. Open Devices → Device Templates.
  3. Select Add Template.
  4. Enter a clear Template name and a description of the product.
  5. Choose the Board and Board model that match the hardware.
  6. Select the protocols the device uses.
  7. Use Add Entity for product-specific readings and controls. Check each entity’s name, key, type, and unit against the firmware.
  8. Select Create Template.
Use one template for units that share the same device setup. If you later change the hardware or entity definition, the template editor provides Publish Version to create a new version. See Device Templates for more detail.

Prepare the factory firmware

The firmware installed on fresh boards must match the production hardware. For the master firmware workflow, prepare a complete file ending in .merged.bin. In Firmware → Upload Firmware, enable As Master Firmware Fleet when uploading this factory image. Keep the regular application-only .bin file for OTA releases.
A regular OTA file is not the complete image needed for a fresh board. Use the correct factory image for the board you are producing.
Follow Master firmware for fresh boards for image preparation. Selecting a device template does not install firmware on physical boards. Use the current Firmngin library with factory provisioning support. Prepare one shared factory image for matching boards, without embedding a particular unit’s production credentials. The factory workflow gives each unit its own identity. The template’s optional Firmware OTA policy controls later firmware updates. It is separate from the initial factory setup.

Prepare what the customer receives

Before selling units, decide how customers will install and use the product. Prepare:
  • A short setup guide, including power and network requirements.
  • Any application or customer access experience your product needs.
  • A way to identify the unit when a customer contacts support.
  • Clear warranty, return, and support information.
  • Your sales channel, payment process, and delivery arrangements.
Keep device credentials private. Customer instructions should contain only the information customers need to use their product. When the representative unit and product information are ready, continue to Create and manage a batch.
